Vastram (वस्त्रम्)

A handmade journal covered in a cloth case

वस्त्रम् • vastram/ vuhs-truhm /noun | Sanskrit (वस्त्रम्) cloth; garment; raiment; a covering or vesture.

This creation began with the desire to convert our favourite articles of clothing into a covering for our journals, rather than discarding them when they no longer fit, or had rips or tears in them. Growing up, we often saw used clothing being converted into dish-cloth or rags or even tote bags. Now the craft of bookbinding presented an opporunity to give a second life to a beloved piece of clothing that didn’t have to go to the landfill.

For our new creations, we pick cloth from sustainable sources, and hand-make literally two or three notebooks that share the same cloth. The result is the opposite of mass-produced clones - something that was made only for you. The entire binding process uses no machines. The paper cutting, folding, sewing, case-making, glueing etc. everything is done by hand.
